Energy Efficiency
Methodology We Adopt
- The general methodology adopted @ Canyon for energy audit is as follows:
- Formation of audit groups for specific areas and end use
- Visual inspection and data collection
- Observations on the general condition of the facility and equipment and quantification
- Identification / verification of energy consumption and other parameters by measurements
- Detailed calculations, analyses and assumptions (cost benefit Analysis) & Validation
- Figuring out potential energy saving opportunities & Implementation

RPO & REC
Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO)
As part of the National Mission on Climate Change, a policy to implement Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) is being put in place by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission. The new policy will require Electricity Distributors, large Captive Consumers and large Open Access Consumers (called Obligated Entities, OEs) to purchase a certain percentage of their total electricity needs from renewable sources.
Our brief Scope of Work for RPO OEs:
Step 1: Pre-feasibility study of the site and DPR preparation
Step 2: Submission of the DPR, Other Application forms and liaisoning
Step 3: Compliance Reporting and Metering Arrangement
Step 4: Facilitating in Technology selection and Commissioning of the project
Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)
Team Canyon can help in following steps for your vision to built-up Solar Independent Power Plant (IPP) under REC Scheme:
Source: IEX, India
Our tentative Scope of Work for REC based project would be as below:
Step 1: Pre-feasibility study of the site and DPR preparation
Step 2: Submission of the DPR, Other Application forms and liaisoning
Step 3: Registration of the project in NLDC & REC Trading
Step 4: Facilitating in Technology selection and Commissioning of the project
Step 5: Facilitating in Financial Closure of the project (Case to Case)
Green CSR
The New Company Bill 2013 by Ministry of Company Affairs has earmarked 2% of Average Net Profit of last three Financial Years to be spent on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by the profitable entities, mostly in the periphery villages of their project sites. Looking at this opportunity and the utmost necessity of the surrounding villages of projects in the entire country, which are in dilapidated conditions, Canyon has formulated a term called GREEN CSR. Under this, Canyon identifies, prepares and facilitate in executing various innovative projects using Renewable Energy Products/Applications as below:
1. Solar Products, almost anywhere in the country
2. Small Wind Products with good wind availability in the area
3. Biogasifier where ample amount of biomass is available
4. Pico Hydro and Micro Hydel projects where stream of water is available
5. Wind-Solar Hybrid Project
6. Solar-Biomass Hybrid Project
We facilitate as below:
1. Feasibility Study and Site Selection
2. Project Cost Estimation
3. Project Completion Timeline
4. Cost-Benefit Analysis along with Social Impact Assessment Report
5. Selection of the most suitable technology
6. Availing Subsidy and/or GBI, if any
5. Building Rural India
5.1 Rural Electrification
400 million Indians have no access to electricity. Expanding electrification and scaling up electricity services is critical to both the economic and social development of India. The current state of electricity services across India can be said to be acute, if not in a crisis mode. The immediate manifestations of this crisis are severe shortcomings in:
1. Access to electricity for rural and urban poor
2. Generation capacity that cannot meet peak demand and
3. Reliability of supply, in terms of predictability of outages and quality of power supply
Canyon is deeply involved in the cause of contributing and improving the rural power scenario. We envision in the following schemes:
- Being a part of Decentralized Distributed Generation Scheme of MoP under RGGVY scheme, where we prepare DPR for a particular village (s) and help executing the same with technical tie-up with technology provider
- Remote Village Electrification Programme of MNRE in which remote villages are to be electrified through various RE applications, such as, Small Solar PV plant, Biomass plant, Small hydro plant depending upon the feasibility.
- Village Energy Security Programme (VESP), in which we spot a village and propose the electrification to state nodal agency for approval from MNRE. Then we start implementing the project along with the villagers and technology provider
Model Solar Village and Mini-grid Project
Model Solar Village
There are more than 1 lakh of villages which are scattered in locality and without or unreliable electricity – not sufficient to study, cook or for livelihood projects. Canyon prepares as well as handholds various stakeholders of Power Sector of India to develop Model Solar Villages with following applications:
1. Solar Home Lighting Systems
2. Solar Study Light
3. Solar Street Lights
4. Solar Water Pump
5. Solar Water Purifier
6. Solar Cooking Systems
7. Solar Water Heating Systems etc.
Mini-grid Project
Sometime, it is imperative to create a mini-grid solar project with one centralized project from where generated solar power is then transmitted to individual homes of the villagers. This project is eligible for 30% Capital Subsidy from Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, GoI.
We provide Concept to Commissioning services to stakeholders for such projects.
Livelihood Projects
Our Livelihood Projects work in various districts of the state of Odisha. In almost all the districts of Odisha, health indicators are poor, there is a shortage of safe drinking water and drought recurs regularly. Inequitable social structures, distorted land distribution, indebtedness, and gender and other inequities contribute to the widespread poverty in Odisha and impede access by poor and marginalized people to resources.
Supporting new patterns of rural development, Canyon contributes to reducing poverty by promoting livelihoods initiatives for the poorest. The livelihoods approach adopted by Canyon focuses on building, and working with, people's existing strengths and resources.
The approach is about informing, enabling initiating and empowering appropriate choices for long-term well being. It involves all sections of rural society across caste, class, gender and other divides.
Policy Initiatives :
Odisha
Team Canyon has been involved in various policy suggestions to different State Governments. Recently, Canyon has suggested a Draft Solar Policy for implementation in the state of Odisha.
1. Draft Solar Policy 2011 - 18th February 2011
2. Draft Solar Policy 2013 - TiE & Canyon - 15th July 2013
3. Draft Solar Policy of Odisha
Chhattisgarh
Canyon Consultancy Pvt. Ltd along with World Watch Institute has been conferred with the assignment by Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) to prepare ‘Sustainable Energy Roadmap’ for Chhattisgarh State Govt.
